 | | Seminars | | 05 February, 2007 | Seminar on "Industrial Biotechnology: Gateway to Sustainable Future" A one-day national seminar on "INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY: GATEWAY TO SUSTAINABLE FUTURE" was held today at ICSSR Complex, Panjab University, Chandigarh. This seminar was organized by Energy Research Centre (ERC), Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE)- Chandigarh Regional Centre and sponsored by Deptt. of Science and Technology, U.T., Chandigarh. The Vice Chancellor of Panjab University Prof. R.C. Sobti inaugurated the Seminar. A number of top biotechnologists of repute from the industry and academia were present. Dr. K.S. Saini, Director Biotechnology & Bioinformatics, Ranbaxy, Gurgaon gave the keynote address. Dr. Saini explained the scenario and future growth of biotechnology for the benefit of mankind. He emphasized mainly on the research needed in collaboration with university and called upon the change of work pattern and mutual understanding between industry and education research institutes.
Dr. U.C. Banerjee from NIPER spoke on stereo-selective bio-catalysis for drugs synthesis. Dr. M. Sitaram Kumar, VP, Panacea Biotech, Mohali stressed upon the impact of biotechnology on human health and the role of his company in Indian drug industry.
In the second session, Prof. Subhash Chand from I.I.T., Delhi gave lecture on "Bioprocessing as a catalyst for sustainable industrial development." Dr. D.K. Sahoo of IMTECH, Chandigarh delivered his talk on use of biotechnology in the production of bio-ethanol as an alternative fuel.
Prof. J.C. Bansal, Chairman, Chandigarh Regional Centre of IIChE welcomed the delegates and Prof. V.K. Rattan, Honarary Director, Energy Research Centre, proposed a vote of thanks to all the participants. Dr. Anupama Sharma compeered the proceedings of seminar. |  |  |  | | 04 September, 2006 | Seminar on Safety in Energy Sector One day national seminar on ?Safety in Energy Sector? held at ICSSR Complex, Panjab University, Chandigarh on September 4, 2006 was jointly organized by Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE)-Regional Centre and Energy Research Centre (ERC), Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prof. J.C. Bansal, Chairman, Chandigarh Regional Centre of IIChE welcomed the guests. Honorable Vice Chancellor, Prof. R.C. Sobti inaugurated the seminar. Shri J.B. Verma, Executive Director, Oil Industry Safety Directorate, GOI delivered the kenote address. Prof. S.K. Sharma, Director, Rayat Institute of Engg. & Tech., former Dean University Instructions and former Honrary Director, ERC delivered special lecture on Risk analysis and Hazards. |  |  |  | | 11 April, 2006 | One Day Awareness Programme on Cleaner Production This programme was organised with the following specific objectives: a) To elucidate the concept of Cleaner Production; b) To discuss the need and potential of Cleaner Production in industries; c) To elaborate a systematic methodology for Cleaner Production; d) To discuss the techniques of Cleaner Production; and finally; e) To enthuse the entrepreneurs in launching a Cleaner Production Assessment programme in their respective industries.
Practising engineers from the industry, teachers and students from engineering colleges; scientists from research organizations and technical authorities from government and the industries departments were invited to participate in this awareness programme. |  |  |  | | 06 March, 2006 | Management System Certification (ISO-9001, ISO-14001 & ISO-18001) A seminar on ?Management System Certification (ISO-9001, ISO-14001 & ISO-18001)? was organized by Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers-Chandigarh Regional Centre, in Collaboration with Bureau of Indian Standards, Northern Regional Office, Chandigarh and Department of Chemical Engineering & Technology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, on March 6, 2006 at ICSSR Complex, Panjab University, Chandigarh. About 100 practising engineers from industry, scientists and teachers participated in the seminar.
Mr. S.P. Sharma, I.A.S., Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi, in his keynote address differentiated between standards and regulations. He emphasized that educational institutions should provide quality education for which standards must be laid down particularly in the phase of competition from foreign Universities
In his deliberations, he said that we have to learn to bring out the best possible product with least cost. In the era of globalization and removal of tariff barriers, countries are emphasizing on technical standards, thereby putting India under pressure for quality compliance requirements. Govt./Public sectors should learn to be sensitive to the demand of people. The BIS has developed first time in India IS 15700 for public sector service delivery evaluating and certifying public sector.
In technical session, Dr. D.R. Sharma, Director, B.I.S., Chandigarh, Mr. Avinit Singh, Principal Counselor, Quality Professional group emphasized on Management System Certification. Dr. Basu from Ambuja Cement and Mr. N.S. Birdie from Siel Chemicals presented case studies from industries
